Can I start by saying that laser hair removal is THE best treatment I have ever had and 100% worth the money, I honestly wish I started it sooner!
I had been wanting to get laser hair removal for a while now however doubted how effective it would be and could not justify spending the money. When I received an email from Australian Skin Clinics advertising their End of Year Financial sale with 50% off laser hair removal I decided now was the time to finally go ahead with it and see what the fuss was all about.
So what is laser hair removal and how does it work?
‘Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser to remove unwanted hair. During the procedure, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle which inhibits future hair growth.’
As this was my first treatment and I chose the cheapest option available which was the underarm and Brazilian package for $38 a session. As most people require 6 – 8 initial sessions for optimum results the packages are sold in sets of 6 so the total cost was $228. The regular price for these are $59 for Brazilian and $45 for underarms; over six sessions thats a total of $624. That is a saving of $396 – I would highly recommend taking up this offer whilst it is still available.
Prior to treatment you will undergo a 15 minute consultation to discuss the procedure, hair type, pre and post care and expected results. I have naturally dark thick hair so I was advised I would need 6 – 8 initial treatments which will be spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart and then 1 treatment every 6 – 12 months for maintenance.
I was extremely nervous at my first treatment not so much for the underarms but for the brazilian. Partly due to the pain I was about to experience and partly because no female (apart from my doctor) had seen my ‘Hoo Haa’. My therapist was extremely friendly and comforting and made me feel extremely at ease. I walked into my appointment and she advised that my singlet top was fine to leave on and gave me a few minutes to remove my skirt and underwear and cover myself with a disposable towel. They get you to lie down on a bed and cover your eyes with a special mask. Personally I found wearing the mask made me feel more comfortable and less self conscious. Once the mask was on she pulled the towel down slightly and drew a small grid with a soft marker to outline the brazilian areas to ensure she didn’t miss a spot and then replaced the towel. She did my underarms first which took approximately 30 seconds each arm followed by the brazilian which took approx. 1 minute. It’s over extremely quickly and hurts ALOT less than waxing. I won’t lie it is painful at times (especially certain areas of the brazilian) however I have found that the first treatment was definitely more painful. I had my second treatment a few days ago and although the machine was set to a slightly higher setting (the first session is always set to a low setting and increases with each session) I found it less painful and only flinched a few times which were mostly around the inner centre area closest to my lady parts as the hair in this area tends to be thicker and more coarse.
The results have been so much better than I could have anticipated! After the first treatment the hair grew back within a week however began to fall out by itself and by the second week I had next to no under arm hair. The hair that did grow back after a few weeks was extremely fine and light and very scarce. I’ve never been able to wear singlets after three days without people commenting about needing to shave but I was able to go 4 weeks and it was not noticeable at all! The brazilian area grew back in patches, some areas such as my bikini line and top half hardly grew back and if it did was very patchy however around the lower centre region the hair grew back relatively normal but at a much slower pace. I’ve just had my second treatment and am extremely excited to see the results! My third treatment is scheduled for six weeks time so I will write an updated post in the next few months 🙂
